Barnard College Supplemental Essay Example - 1
In college, you will encounter others with diverse viewpoints and experiences. Describe an instance where you engaged with someone who held a different opinion and explain how it shaped your perspective on the issue. (150 words max)
Last summer, I volunteered at a community center where I met Sam, an elderly veteran with strong views on patriotism. He believed that not standing for the national anthem was disrespectful, while I felt it was a form of protest. Our discussions were intense but respectful. Sam shared stories of his service, which made me see his perspective as deeply personal. In turn, I explained how kneeling could be a peaceful expression of dissent. Through our talks, I learned the importance of understanding the personal stories behind opinions. This experience taught me that engaging with diverse viewpoints not only broadens my perspective but also fosters empathy and respect, skills I'll carry with me to college.
